Our company was started in 1949 by Philip and Rita Renning, accomplished artists with interests in fine printing and type design. Back then the company was named Ten Bamboo Studio after The Book of Ten Bamboos, a 17th century album of woodcuts that serves to this day as a style manual for Chinese painting techniques. The Rennings founded our company on the creativity, craftsmanship and discipline required to produce exquisite stationery. Their products were sold through some of the finest stores in the country, many of which continue to sell our products today. In 1984, June and Bill De Jonge acquired the company, and in 1987 they moved it from Wellesley, Massachusetts, to West Kennebunk, Maine. The company name was changed to William Arthur, Bill’s first and middle name. Business expanded rapidly in the 1980s and ’90s as we introduced more product lines and honed our extraordinary customer service, considered by many to be the best in the industry. For 60 years, discerning stationery users have chosen our products for their beautiful art, exquisite craftsmanship and the substantial weight and feel of our products. The use of fine stationery is enjoying a revival today as people look for ways to express their uniqueness, announce significant events and demonstrate caring in tangible ways as a reaction to the increasing impersonalization of technology. Whether seeking classic elegance, charming whimsy, or rich opulence, our customers delight in the “traditional with a twist” appeal of William Arthur invitations and stationery. Today William Arthur, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hallmark Cards since 1997, employs over 300 dedicated professionals. We provide a wide variety of personalized and boxed stationery products that are sold to customers online and through carefully selected dealers worldwide.
